This past weekend was Mother’s Day, and it was glorious. I’m not big into celebrating holidays, especially ones where I am the focus, but this one was different. This was one of those times when life goes right. It felt like our family jived, like things made sense, so we all had fun.
Maybe it was because we live in Minnesota and this beautiful spring hasn’t gotten old yet so we enjoyed just being outside. Or maybe it was because the stars aligned and somehow all of my kids were having a good day and just enjoying each other. Maybe it was because my husband and I were refreshed and healthy enough to handle a busy but fun weekend with our kids.
No matter what the reason was, it was perfect. We spent Saturday hiking, climbing rocks, and exploring glacial potholes along the St. Croix River, consuming root beer floats and burgers at the local diner, mini-golfing, and perusing a sculpture garden…all while soaking up the sun. On Sunday, we went to church, spent a lazy afternoon in the back yard, and ended it all with ice cream and a trip to the movie theater. All of this happened with very little complaining, whining, or arguing. Everyone just seemed so happy to be out and about…together.
Not every weekend will get to be like this. Not every Mother’s Day will be so joyful and fun. But this one was, and I loved every minute of it.
When you have a good weekend, a good day, or even a good moment, it’s easy to think you have FINALLY arrived. That life is just easier and better now. But here’s my (probably unpopular) advice: Don’t wish it could last forever, because it won’t.
Just enjoy it. Soak it in. Absorb the moments when life goes right, because you’ll need them when life goes wrong.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories on when life goes right. Share with us in the comments!
