I used to wear way more makeup than I do today. Part of it was insecurity, and some of it was just habit. Now, if you like to wear more makeup than me, I am not hating on that. For me, I just realized that I didn’t find myself beautiful UNLESS I had makeup on, but I knew that it wasn’t true. I’ve slowly wore less and less and makeup, at least on a daily basis. For special occasions where I dress up, I will still put on a little more makeup.
I’m just showing you today what I usually wear on the days when I’m going out– to work, church, out with a friend, etc. When I’m staying home, I just use moisturizer. I’ve found that wearing less makes me feel more fresh and light, less concerned about smudging my makeup or messing up my “face”. I can just be me, and that’s beautiful. I know it’s cliche to say, but I know that I am beautiful just the way I am, because that’s the way God created me. That’s true of you too!
If you are looking to simplify your makeup routine or start a minimal one, this post is for you. If you have more sensitive skin than me, you may want to try different products, but the products I use get the job done for me. I can get my makeup done in under 5 minutes when I follow the steps outlined below:
My Simple 5-Minute Makeup Routine
First of all, sorry for the terrible pictures. I need to stop taking them in my master bathroom. The lighting is HORRIBLE!
As you can see in the pictures above, this isn’t too far off from how I look with makeup. That’s the point! When I wear makeup, it’s for two reasons: (1) To even out the tone of my skin, and (2) To simply enhance what I’ve already got. For me, that means I wear a tinted moisturizer on my face instead of foundation paired with a concealer for under my eyes, tinted lip gloss or lip balm, and mascara so you can actually see my eyelashes. They are pretty long, but they are so light that you almost can’t see them!
Step One: Tinted Moisturizer
I like to buy a BB cream for my moisturizer, because it serves several purposes. It’s a sunscreen, moisturizer, and “foundation” since it’s tinted. I buy the Covergirl BB cream in the picture above. I like that it’s light weight, so I don’t feel like I’m wearing any makeup at all, but it still does a good job of evening out my skin. Because it’s so light, I can quickly spread it on my entire face, and it’s impossible to use too much. But a little does actually go a long way. I only use a bean (?!) sized amount.
Step 2: Mascara
I actually have pretty long eyelashes, but you almost can’t see them. I use a black-brown mascara to darken my lashes. I like to wear mascara (most of the time) when I go out. Sometimes if I’m just going shopping, I’ll only wear one coat of mascara. Otherwise, I usually wear three coats. The three pictures below show each coat.
Step Three: Concealer
I’ve been cursed, like many others, with dark circles under my eyes that always make me look tired. The tinted moisturizer already helped with this, but I still like to put a layer of concealer under my eyes. I try to use a concealer that is one shade lighter than my skin tone. This brightens up my eyes and hides the darkness. After applying the concealer under my eyes, I use a finger to smooth it out across all the dark parts, and finally use a sponge wedge to blend the concealer out with the rest of my face.
Here is the original picture I showed you before I put on makeup, compared to the picture of me after concealer. Check out those disappearing dark circles! (By the way, I just couldn’t decide if I should smile or not for these pictures. It wasn’t for a more dramatic before/after affect.) 😉
Step Four: Lip Gloss or Lip Balm
Finally, I like to apply a lip gloss or lip balm that’s tinted. Right now I’m using Vaseline Lip Therapy. It’s perfect for Minnesota’s dry air in the winter (and spring). This one is even tinted to give my lips a tiny bit of color. Vaseline has others available that are not tinted.
That’s all I put on my face on the days I’m leaving the house unless I’m dressing up for a special occasion. You may disagree with me, but I feel like that is all my face needs.
I want to encourage you to simplify your makeup routine to under 5 minutes as well. Figure out which parts of your face you want to enhance and focus your efforts there. OR go without, but remember to wear a smile so you can rock that fresh-faced look. 😉
