24 Casual Fall Outfits From My Capsule Wardrobe

We’ve all been there: staring into our closet at all of the clothing, convinced we have nothing to wear. Others of us have a hard time knowing what goes well together, so creating outfits is simply daunting. In both scenarios, having a capsule wardrobe can help tremendously. Today, I’m going to show you how I use my capsule wardrobe to quickly put together casual fall outfits.

Getting dressed had always overwhelmed me. Trying to sort through my closet to find pieces that actually look good together, and hoping some new idea would just “jump out at me” was my norm.

Creating a capsule wardrobe caused me to be more intentional with the clothing I choose. And, the results on how easy it is for me to get dressed are amazing. That’s because I have a cohesive look across my entire wardrobe that makes it easy for me to mix and match! 😉

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a smaller, pared-down wardrobe of only items you absolutely love and are preferably versatile, timeless, and of high quality.

Having a wardrobe containing only items you adore means you don’t have clothing around that don’t fit you well, don’t flatter your body shape, or simply don’t fit your personal style.

Having a capsule wardrobe filled with versatile pieces means you can mix and match to create many outfits with a minimal amount of items.

Creating a capsule with mostly timeless clothing means you won’t spend as much money on clothes since what you have doesn’t quickly go out of style.

And finally, having a wardrobe of quality materials means you can buy less because they don’t wear out quickly.

Capsule Wardrobe Outfits

When it comes to putting outfits together from a capsule wardrobe, the “hard” work is already done. Your capsule should already be filled with versatile pieces in mostly neutral colors. This allows you to simply select a piece of clothing you want to wear and quickly see several different options for what you could wear with it.

Capsule wardrobe outfits can come together quickly and easily. Since most of the pieces in a capsule wardrobe mix and match, each piece can be part of several different outfits. This allows you to be creative and get the most out of a small wardrobe!

Some tips for picking pieces that are more versatile to easily come up with capsule wardrobe outfits:

  • Select mostly pieces of neutral color, then add in a few pops of color if you would like.
  • Choose pieces in a variety of categories (i.e. blouses, layers, accessories).
  • Go for a more classic style for basics, with a few interesting items mixed in to show your personal style.

There’s an App for That

If you are more style-challenged, like me, using an app like Cladwell for iOS is incredibly helpful. I use Cladwell to organize my wardrobe by season, plan outfits, and evaluate the effectiveness of my capsule.

The Cladwell app makes it so easy to see what you own, as well as all of the possible outfits your wardrobe is capable of creating! If you are feeling stuck, the Cladwell app will give you suggestions.

You can even choose an item for your closet and see all of the possible outfits with that piece. Or, if you’re feeling creative, you are able to create custom outfits.

By using the Cladwell app to track what you wear each day, you are able to see if there are any problems with your capsule.

You might notice over time that you are only wearing 30% of your clothing. Or, you might notice that you never choose a particular piece of clothing. Now, you can easily evaluate the effectiveness of each piece in your capsule, as well as your wardrobe as a whole. 😊

24 Casual Fall Outfits from my Capsule Wardrobe

Alright, finally I can show you some of the many casual fall outfits I can create out of my autumn wardrobe. According to my Cladwell app, I can create over a thousand outfits with my capsule! 😱

Some of these are outfits to wear with leggings, but most are casual outfits with jeans. Keeping the pieces similar in style (in this case, casual) is one way to make a capsule that’s versatile!

Here are some of my favorite casual fall outfits:

Striped Tunic

My striped tunic gets a lot of use because it looks good on its own or layered up. Because of a tunic’s length, it is a great option for wearing with leggings. I can create many casual fall outfits with this one striped tunic!

For a little more creativity, you could wear a striped tunic with a scarf or you could tie your tunic to shorten its length.

Chambray Shirt

The chambray shirt is my absolute favorite thing in my capsule. I can wear this in all Minnesota seasons, and I can dress it up or down. This is the most versatile piece I own, allowing me to create SO MANY casual fall outfits.

I only show this shirt being used to put together casual outfits with jeans, but you could also wear this shirt with leggings. I just like tops to cover my bum if I’m wearing them with leggings, and my shirt is just not that long.

If you want to get a little more creative with your outfits, add a patterned scarf to a chambray shirt or wear it open with a striped tee underneath. You can even wear this with a skirt or dress (I like to tie the bottom to make the top shorter).

Floral Dress

I don’t wear a lot of dresses, but I love this floral dress because of how casual it is (unless I want to dress it up, of course!). Mine is lightweight enough for me to wear alone in the summer, but I can also get away with wearing it year-round by adding or taking away layers.

For a more custom outfit, add simple scarves and jewelry to your floral dress. For a dressier outfit, add a blazer and pumps.

Graphic Tank

Another favorite of mine is my giraffe graphic tank, and I get so many compliments whenever I wear it.

This is another one that I wear year-round by adding and taking away layers. It is great as a stand-alone top in the summer, but it carries me all the way to winter with the addition of cardigan sweaters.

Adding a little bit of color or pattern to your capsule like this makes a simple capsule wardrobe so much more interesting!

To take a graphic tank or tee from day to night, simply add some heels and accessories.

So, you get the idea. This is just SOME of the outfits I can put together with SOME of my clothing.

I chose to show you some outfits with just 4 of the pieces in my fall capsule. Even with only those, I’ve shown you enough outfits for 24 days. Amazing, right?!

If you are hoping to create an intentional and simple wardrobe, you will probably get the most versatility by building a wardrobe that includes mostly casual outfits with jeans. Jeans are so easy to dress up or down, especially if you own ones in a darker wash or even a color.

Hopefully seeing an example like this helps you see how a small, intentional wardrobe can go a long way.

Having a capsule wardrobe makes it so much easier to create outfits and look put-together on a daily basis. With the busyness that fall tends to bring, being able to quickly put together casual fall outfits is a huge help and time-saver.

    1. You are so welcome! I’m glad that you found it helpful. And thank you for taking the time to comment!

  1. This is such a timely post! The temperature is finally cooling down and I’ve been looking for some inspiration for bundling up. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Davi! I’ve had a capsule for over a year now, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by all of the benefits. 😊

  2. Capsule wardrobes are great if you don’t have much storage space =D I’d be worried to get bored of the items though, since you would be wearing them over and over again.

    1. True. I thought the same thing, though, and I was pleasantly surprised. But, it’s definitely not for everyone!

  3. Sadly there really isn’t much of a FALL in Los Angeles, so I will probably just be wearing the same summer attire throughout these next few months. I am totally looking forward to long sleeves though!

    1. I know what you mean…I have family there! I think it’s still doable to mix and match with a smaller wardrobe in LA, but it’s harder when it’s not cool enough for layers. But still, jackets and scarves come out even in LA, don’t they? 😉
